The Island(s)
The Zanzibar Archipelago consists of several islands lying off the coast of East Africa south of the Somali sea.
There are four main islands, three primary developed islands and a fourth coral island that serves as an essential breeding ground for seabirds.
Governance:
In 1964 Zanzibar, together with Pemba Island and some other smaller islands, joined with Tanganyika on the mainland to form the United Republic of Tanzania.
Birthplace of Freddie Mercury:
One of the most famous musicians (Queen’s lead singer) in the world, Farroukh Bulsara – who you might know as Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar.

Ahead of its Time:
Zanzibar was the first country in Africa to introduce color television in 1973.
Rare creatures on the islands
Zanzibar is home to the red colobus monkey and the Zanzibar leopard.
Another rare animal that resides in Unguja is the Zanzibar servaline genet. These cat-like animals were first discovered in the 1990s, and first photographed in 2003.
Zanzibar is also home of the coconut crab, the largest crab in the world (3 feet long and reportedly one of the most delicious).
Spice Island:
Spice farming is a major part of Zanzibar’s economy.
The islands are sometimes referred to as the Spice Islands, due to the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper that are grown there.
It Has the Largest Number of Carved Doors in East Africa:
The carved doors typically represent the cultural roots of Swahili.
